Biography
Laila Samy is an Egyptian-British multidisciplinary artist, based in London with an MA in Music Performance from London College of music UWL (2025), a B.A. Honours in Cinematography from the Higher Institute of Cinema, Cairo (2009), and a B.A. Honours in English Literature from Cairo University (2001). Her practice blends Arabic vocal heritage, cinematic composition, and contemporary performance.
She began her artistic journey at the Cairo Opera House’s Talent Development Centre and later joined El Warsha Theatre Troupe, performing work rooted in oral storytelling and Egyptian folk traditions. She also appeared in several acclaimed films, including The Yacoubian Building, Aquarium, and In the Last Days of the City.
Laila has collaborated with leading Cairo-based arts organisations—such as Mahatat, Nazra for Feminist Studies, and Cimatheque—and has worked as a director of photography on fiction and documentary shorts, including her 35mm project Solo.
Now based in London, she works in media production while developing interdisciplinary projects that bridge Arabic and British cultural perspectives. Her recent performances and workshops explore dialect, vocality, and storytelling, offering contemporary interpretations of folk traditions in North Africa and the Arab world.
